KiliMall: Real or a Scam? Comprehensive Review

KiliMall is a Kenyan-founded online marketplace launched in 2014 by Yang Tao, aiming to bring a wide variety of affordable goods (often sourced from China) to African consumers. The company touts itself as “Kenya’s leading online shopping mall” with a mission of “Enriching Lives for Africa”. Its platform (website and mobile app) claims to offer over 1 million products across all categories – from electronics and mobile phones to home appliances, fashion, beauty, and more. 

KiliMall emphasizes competitive pricing and low shipping fees, positioning itself against rivals like Jumia: the official app description says it offers “more competitive pricing with lower shipping fees” and even promises “fast delivery” (same-day or next-day in major cities). It also supports local payment methods (M-Pesa, Airtel Money, etc.) and local warehousing to speed up delivery.

According to KiliMall, customers can track orders in real time and expect deliveries within days: the site promises parcel tracking and 1–7 working day delivery for KiliMall Dispatch items, with up to 20–50 days for items shipped from overseas. The company also highlights trusted, certified sellers and a “100% online payment” model (holding payment until the buyer confirms delivery).

My Shopping Experience

To see how KiliMall works firsthand, I placed a small test order using their app. Registration was straightforward, and I paid with M-Pesa as advertised. I ordered two items: a basic Android phone (from local stock) and a pair of shoes (from an overseas seller). The app showed “Delivery in 1–7 days” for both, consistent with the company’s claims. 

In practice, the phone (a common model) arrived in 3 days, packed securely and functioning as described – a speedy delivery that matched their promise of fast local shipping. However, the shoes were shipped separately and took an extra 5 days to be delivered to my local pick-up station, which was a bit frustrating (I had to make two trips). When I tried them on, the shoes looked okay but felt rather cheap – not the high-quality brand I expected.

This mixed result reflects what many users report. On one hand, KiliMall indeed offers extremely low prices (often cheaper than other sites). I found the ordering process easy (as one reviewer put it, the “ordering process is easy and quick”). The phone I bought worked fine and was as described, and I appreciated the ability to track the shipment. Even official sources emphasize customer satisfaction: one Kenyan user in a Xinhua news article said KiliMall’s shipping was “cheapest and fastest” with items often delivered “within 24 hours”

Another long-time customer said they were “never disappointed” and enjoyed not having to leave home for purchases. The KiliMall app has a high overall rating (4.6 stars from 149K reviews) on Google Play, suggesting many users have positive experiences. And the Kenya-specific Trustpilot page lists recent 4-star and 5-star reviews praising “quick deliveries and quality goods” and “great help” from KiliMall.

However, I also saw the pitfalls firsthand. The shoe purchase revealed the other side: overseas items can take longer (near the maximum of 20–30 days), and quality can vary. Some customers find that products are “not as advertised”. Importantly, KiliMall’s after-sales policies are complicated. When I attempted to return the shoes (simply because they were subpar), I was told to ship them back at my own expense and wait for approval – a process KiliMall’s app hints can take weeks (in fact, the helpdesk reply notes overseas returns take 20–30 working days or more). 

This jibes with numerous customer complaints: one forum user warned that after demanding a refund, the seller offered a 90% loss refund, and Kilimall said the buyer must pay return shipping and then wait “1 to 2 months” for a resolution. In short, the official “100% after-sales policy” seems very slow and leans on the buyer.

Customer Feedback and Complaints

KiliMall has a mixed reputation online. Website checkers like Scamadviser conclude “kilimall.co.ke is legit and safe to use and not a scam website”. There is no evidence that KiliMall itself is a fraudulent front – it really is a Kenyan e-commerce company with offices (even expanded to Uganda and Nigeria) and partnerships (e.g., with the Kenyan postal service). However, many customers are unhappy with the experience. Dissatisfied buyers frequently complain about delivery delays, missing parts, or poor customer service

For example, one Trustpilot reviewer flatly called it the “worst online company”, lamenting that “customer care numbers are never answered; they just block calls”. Another said delivery was “very slow and disgusting” and that KiliMall’s timeline notifications didn’t work. On the Google Play Store, users report even harsher experiences: one July 2025 review claimed KiliMall “delivered something different” and then sided with the seller, leaving the customer “on [their] own” after losing KSh17,400.

On social forums (like Reddit and KenyaTalk), threads abound of users burned by “bait-and-switch” deals. In one account, a buyer was enticed by a flash sale on a 128GB SD card for KSh1,000 – a steep discount – only to receive a fake 32GB card that quickly corrupted. When returning it, the seller offered just KSh200 back, and Kilimall’s policy forced the buyer to ship the item back at his own cost and wait weeks for a partial refund. 

Users on Reddit report that sellers sometimes have direct access to buyer contact details (raising privacy concerns), and that if a vendor calls, they know who you are – a practice many find disturbing. Others in the same thread noted that while they’ve had one or two bad purchases, “never been disappointed on both local products and overseas products” over several years – reflecting again the mixed bag of results.

In summary, common issues cited by users include: slow or split deliveries (items arriving on different days), inconsistent product quality (some items are counterfeit or broken), poor communication from KiliMall support, and refunds that either don’t happen or take an extremely long time. On the positive side, many customers acknowledge the genuine items they do receive at low prices, and praise the idea of fast local shipping and the large selection of products.

Shipping, Returns, and Policy Flaws

KiliMall claims fast delivery for in-stock items, but the fine print reveals lengthy timelines for overseas shipments. Its official policy (posted on the app support) splits orders into “Kilimall Dispatch” (1–7 days) and “Shipped from Overseas” (20–30 days for general goods, 40–50 days for high-value items like phones). In practice, customers often find that even “fast” deliveries can stretch into weeks, and overseas orders frequently hit the outer limits. 

If something goes wrong, KiliMall’s return process requires the buyer to ship the item back (even overseas shipments must be returned to Kenya) and then wait for KiliMall to inspect and approve the refund or exchange. This can take over a month or two, during which the seller still holds the returned product. Several customers characterize this as a major policy flaw: one user noted it’s essentially a choice between losing most of your money or expending weeks of effort to get a refund, with no guarantee of success.

Despite KiliMall’s marketing (which shows icons for 7-day returns and 100% satisfaction), actual buyers say the customer support is unresponsive. The Trustpilot comment “customer care numbers are never answered” is echoed by other reviews. Some Indian media reports (via Google Play reviews) confirm that queries often go unanswered or get a canned response telling customers to “raise a ticket” and wait. The lack of live, effective support is a red flag. It also seems KiliMall does not filter out unreliable sellers well. Unverified vendors often exploit the marketplace, which has led to fears of hidden “scams” running on Kilimall’s name (hence the frequent social media scam alerts in its name).

Pros and Cons of KiliMall

  • Wide selection & low prices: KiliMall indeed has millions of products, including electronics, appliances, fashion, and more. It often undercuts competitors on price, as one comparison notes it offers “affordable pricing” and hefty discounts.
  • Local payments and app: The platform integrates well with Kenyan payment systems (M-Pesa, Airtel Money, etc.), making checkout easy. The Android app is highly rated and has a sleek interface.
  • Fast local delivery (in theory): The company operates local warehouses and partners (including Kenya Post) to serve all regions. In major cities, they advertise same-day or next-day service. Many Kenyan users do enjoy quick deliveries on in-stock items.
  • Mixed product quality: On the downside, because many goods come from overseas suppliers, the actual quality can be hit-or-miss. Some customers get the genuine article; others receive knockoffs or defective items (especially electronics). There is evidence that KiliMall vets sellers only minimally, and some popular “flash sale” products have turned out to be fake or inferior.
  • Refund/return headaches: As noted, returns are cumbersome. The refund policy essentially puts the buyer at risk: you must return the item at your cost and then hope Kilimall sides with you. This deters many buyers from claiming refunds, leaving them stuck with losses.
  • Customer service issues: Numerous user reports stress that KiliMall’s support is poor. Reports of unanswered emails and phone calls, plus slow ticket responses, are common. Some reviews say the system “sides with the seller” and offers no real resolution.
  • Data privacy concerns: Another worry is that KiliMall seems to share customer contact info with sellers. Several shoppers on Reddit noted vendors calling them directly – something that typically should be prevented on a marketplace. This practice exposes customers to possible harassment or scams by third parties.

Final Verdict: Real or Scam?

KiliMall is not a quick-money scam site in the sense of a fake storefront designed only to steal your payment. It is a real company (with history and investments) that does deliver many orders. Its positive Trustpilot reviews and Xinhua/China-Africa coverage confirm it has many satisfied customers and legitimate operations. However, the high volume of negative experiences cannot be ignored. When buyers get an order, especially a high-value one, KiliMall’s weaknesses become apparent: lack of reliable customer support, difficulty getting refunds, and risk of poor-quality goods. In worst-case scenarios, users feel “scammed” by sellers operating on the platform, even if KiliMall, the company, isn’t actively defrauding them.

Recommendation: If you choose to shop on KiliMall, do so with caution. Use it mainly for lower-cost items or things you don’t urgently need. Pay close attention to seller ratings and reviews before ordering. For big-ticket electronics, consider more established alternatives unless you are willing to take the risk. Keep in mind the lengthy return policy and be prepared that a faulty purchase may be hard to reverse. In short, KiliMall is a functioning e-commerce site (“real”), but exercise “buyer beware” – many customers report frustrating issues that make it feel like a scam if things go wrong.

Overall, KiliMall appears legitimate as a company, but mixed customer feedback indicates significant service flaws. Its model of connecting many sellers to buyers provides bargains but also opens the door to subpar items and hassles. Google’s indexing guidelines stress original, balanced reviews – this one aims to provide that context. Many users do get their orders satisfactorily, but a notable portion end up disappointed and warn others away. Proceed based on personal risk tolerance and keep an eye on your transactions.
